I'm Headed to Poughkeepsie, NY!

I will be taking a temporary assignment in Poughkeepsie, NY for the remainder of the year! This will be a big change with huge impacts both in my personal life and my financial goals.

I will be taking this assignment as part of a development program I am participating in at work. I'm pretty excited about the opportunity; on the one hand it will be great to get away and spend sometime in a different part of the country; on the other it could be a difficult time period for my now long distance relationship and my finances.

Obviously this assignment will have huge impacts on my financial goals for the year. Its a temporary assignment and it looks like I may have to pay for all my living expenses while I am up in NY (while still paying my expenses in NC). I'll plan on sharing more information about my temporary assignment and how it will impact my financial goals as I learn more details.

On a side note I turned 30 today. Kinda scary, but luckily I haven't had time to think about it yet......

  • Happy Birthday!

Good luck with your long distance relationship - just remember that distance makes the heart grow fonder. I am 29 and my husband of 6 years and I did the same thing a few years back - well worth financial and personal rewards...IN THE LONG RUN!

  • Thank you everyone. I had an awesome birthday - my girlfriend totally suprised me with tickets on the 5th row to the Carolina Hurricanes Playoff Game against the Jersey Devils, dinner, and a suprise birthday party besides - she really outdid herself. It was definitely a day to remember.

  • A late happy birthday to you from frugal@1stMillionAt33.com.

Remember to deduct your rents & expenses from the temporary assignment on your schedule A for 1040. I'm pretty sure that they are deductible for such work-related temporary assignment.

  • Happy late birthday! 30 isn't that bad at all.. I had mine just 3 years ago... :-)

I am a little surprised to see that IBM doesn't cover your expenses in NY. Usually, we travel monday through friday and they pay for all travel expenses while you are away from your home locations... Maybe you are in a different division... cuz I have never paid a dime to travel for business... instead.. it is a good way to snap all kinds of miles and hotel points...

  • Yuna,
Yup different division - in the area I'm in, they move people around all the time and have slimmed down the package given to just the bare minimum (get you and your stuff to where you need to be). When you join this area that is just something your expected to bear. I have been lucky as it will only be a one time deal for me - others do this many times.
